History of C&A PL
The company was founded in 1872 by Christophe Asselin and Georges Albert Auriol, two French businessmen. The first store opened in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. In 1921, the company merged with a Belgian retailer called La Redoute, and changed its name to C&A. In 1934, C&A PL acquired a British retailer called J. W. Robson & Co., and in 1936 acquired the German retailer Kaufhof. The company's current name, C&A PL, was adopted in 1978.
In 1984, the company entered into an alliance with Tommy Hilfiger to create the Tommy Hilfiger/C&A brand which operated worldwide until 2001 when it was sold to Liz Claiborne Inc.. In 1990, C&A became a publicly traded company on the Euronext Brussels stock exchange under the symbol 'CAS.'
