Saks Fifth Avenue: Everything You Need To Know.
Horace Saks and Bernard Gimbel, key merchant families from New York City, came together in the early 1900s to create a place that had been lacking in the retail market before. Their goal was to construct a unique specialty store that would be synonymous with fashionable, gracious living.
Things To Know About Saks Fifth Avenue.
With an overwhelming amount of money, these key merchant families were able to buy a site between 49th and 50th Streets on upper Saks Fifth Avenue. When they opened their “dream store” on September 15th of 1924, it became the first large retail operation to open in what was then primarily a residential neighborhood. Engaging customers with its finest quality men’s and women’s fashions, as well as its extraordinary customer service program, Saks Fifth Avenue has become synonymous with taste and elegance.
A look at the evolution of fashion during the 20th century.
This allowed for the merging of the Saks and Gimbel families, which resulted in the construction of Saks Fifth Avenue. Adam Gimbel (Bernard’s cousin) became Horace Saks’s assistant. With a sudden death at 66 years old, Adam Gimbel became president of Saks Fifth Avenue, and he brought with him the imaginative foresight that has thrived to now be at the top of its success.
Adam Gimbel’s 3 life lessons from his retail career
With many philanthropic endeavors, Adam Gimbel raised a massive amount of financial capital for his retail company. He retired in 1969 after a successful career, and used his first action to redecorate the store in the Art Moderne style from the Paris Exposition of 1925. This made it possible to personalize smaller specialty stores within the grand luxury of the established superstore.
Saks Fifth Avenue’s growth from 1972 to today
Between 1972 and 1989, 20 new stores opened in the U.S., many of them in Texas and the Midwest–and 8 stores were replaced by newer ones as well. Saks Fifth Avenue completed an office and retail complex at 370 5th Ave. in Manhattan, New York City on June 1990, which resulted in more selling areas for the already successful New York City flagship store.
The Saks Fifth Avenue Business History
In 1973, the Saks Fifth Avenue was acquired by BATUS, a subsidiary of B.A.T. Industries through the acquisition of Gimbel Bros., Inc. In July 1990, affiliates of Investcorp S.A. (“Investcorp”) and a group of international investors acquired Saks Fifth Avenue from BAT, beginning a new chapter in life for Saks Fifth Avenue. Philip B. Miller joined Saks Fifth Avenue in 1990 as Vice Chairman of and Director at Saks Fifth Avenue, followed by becoming Chairman and Chief Executive Office at Saks Holdings, Inc., in 1993 before being named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1995 after five years as Vice Chairman there.
The History of Saks Fifth Avenue in the Twenty-First Century.
In 1994, Saks Fifth Avenue acquired four former I. Magnin stores on the West Coast to grow their presence in that area. The stores were renovated and expanded in 1995, with the opening of Saks West- BH and the new Saks Fifth Avenue store in 1997. They created more space for women’s designer selling in San Francisco- by building a store at Post Street, made possible by the addition of two stores on 113th Street- Houston and Dallas. -All men’s categories plus women’s sizes are found at shops scattered across these two sites-and now there is an effort to create “intense” shopping on the East Coast.
